Saluting Face joined Unicode 14.0 in 2021 — a simple yellow smiley giving a military-style salute. It quickly became Gen Z shorthand for “respect” and “I acknowledge that.”
What it is, technically
Codepoint: U+1FAE1. Available on iOS 15.4+, Android 12+. The face shows a forward-facing smiley with one hand raised flat to the brow.
What it actually means
- Respect: “Real one for that 🫡” — earned acknowledgment
- “o7”: gaming slang that visually mimics a salute, now replaced by the emoji
- Sympathy: “Tough loss 🫡” — solidarity without overdoing it
- Acknowledgment: “Noted 🫡” — adult version of thumbs-up
- Fallen comrade: meme tribute when something gets cancelled or shut down
How it looks on different platforms
- Apple: Clean salute, hand horizontal at brow
- Google (Android): Cartoonish but clear
- Microsoft (Fluent): 3D rendering, detailed hand
- Samsung: Smaller, contained gesture
- Twitter/X: Flat 2D, simple lines
Common combinations
- 🫡🫡 — emphasized respect
- 🫡💔 — RIP / fallen tribute
- 🫡🔥 — props for something cool
- 🫡📜 — formal acknowledgment
When to skip it
- In actual military / formal contexts where it might trivialize
- For casual hello — use 👋 instead
Related emojis
- 👋 Waving Hand — generic greeting
- 🙏 Folded Hands — respect with gratitude
- 💪 Flexed Biceps — strength acknowledgment
- 🎖️ Military Medal — pairs for tribute
